Get to know Habibullah an individual radiating with positivity. A person who takes control of his own life narrative by understanding himself, his support system and a realization that only he can shape his own life. Read his story to be inspired by his quiet strength to change the world in his own way.
1. What’s your story?
I came to Singapore in 2015 not having any friends and other than work, I do not know what else to do. I decided to become a student in a center that provides English lessons so that I can learn English as well as take computer classes to enrich myself with new skills. As I do not want to be the one to only benefit from this, I asked my friends from work to learn the skills with me as well. I want to help them change the way they communicate.
I decided to become a volunteer through the volunteer program. The center that I go to felt like family to me. I volunteer with them from 7-10pm on the weekdays. Through this, I met a lot of people from different backgrounds. I also felt myself opening up.
2. What was the event that led you to volunteer?
My biggest inspiration to start volunteering has to be my father. I want to follow in my father’s footsteps. Back home, my father helped a lot of people whenever they need any aid. Hence, when I was in college, I joined the rotary club to expose myself to various volunteering opportunities. When I came to Singapore, I did the same with the center that I am studying at. I just want to help those around me and help bridge the gap for my friends at work with the center’s opportunities.
3. When were you most satisfied or feel like you impacted something?
I was able to fill up my free time with volunteering when I am in Singapore. This made me feel satisfied as I am able to help in any way I can. I am also able to improve the way I communicate through daily interactions with people.
4. What is this change that you see in yourself?
I can feel that my life changed when I give parts of myself to volunteering. I actually developed an organization in Bangladesh called the “Last page of humanity.” The organization currently has 41 volunteers. We do a lot of giving through this organization, especially during Ramadhan where we will give out food and groceries to the villages in the area. We mostly communicate through our Facebook page and messenger to keep the organization going when I am not in Bangladesh. I would also sometimes give part of my salary to friends in need back home to help them with their current plight.
5. Use a word/phrase to describe your social good journey?
I would say that I change my own life. I take control of how my life should be.
6. What do you think is your superpower?
My father and mother. These two people change my life and helped paved the way to build my passion for volunteering.
[ As we interview him, we were astounded by his motivation to change the lives of others and himself not only in Singapore but also back home in his own country. We were also clearly amazed by his simple yet powerful realization to realize that his parents were his superpower all along.]
